Seawater as hydrogen fuel

20 March 2019 Salt Water Ecogas

A team of scientists from Stanford has found a way to get hydrogen fuel from ordinary seawater

It is known that upon contact with an electric current, water molecules decompose into oxygen and hydrogen. In theory, the latter can be used as an environmentally friendly energy source.

But this technique seems simple only at first glance. In practice, fuel for just one car will require an enormous amount of fresh water.

The main obstacle was that the salts corroded the parts of the device, and it could only work for about 12 hours.

But studies have shown that if you cover the anode with a protective layer rich in negative charges, they will begin to repel chloride and significantly extend the life of the product - up to a thousand hours.

To make their invention completely safe for nature, the authors used solar panels.

According to them, the novelty can be used not only for the production of energy, but also in the equipment of divers and submarines, since oxygen suitable for breathing is formed in the process.
