Biofuels from grass

Scientists at the University of Ghent (Belgium) have developed a method for converting grass into biofuel

The researchers pre-treated the grass. With the help of bacteria, lactic acid and its derivatives were obtained from the sugars that make up the herb. Lactic acid, as an intermediate chemical, can be used to produce other compounds, such as biodegradable plastics or fuels. Scientists used it to obtain nylon acid, and the latter was converted into decane, which can be used as aviation fuel.

At the same time, scientists noticed that there is still a lot of work to be done on the path of real transformation of grass into biofuel. During the study, only a few drops of biofuel were obtained. Another obstacle is that it is very expensive to obtain it. In addition, the engines will be adapted to a new type of fuel.
