Entrepreneur Arthur Kay has created a company that is going to produce biofuels for London buses from recycled coffee. Biobean collects coffee waste (cake) from large London coffee houses like Costa Coffee and converts it into liquid fuel. In a few weeks, the company expects to demonstrate a prototype bus that will run exclusively on this fuel.
In London, the issue of air purity is acute - in the city center, due to the abundance of transport and dense buildings, the air quality is worse than the average in Europe. “We are going through a period where society is moving away from dependence on fossil fuels and starting to use other fuels, and biofuels play an important role in this process,” says Arthur Kay.
The biochemical method that extracts fuel from the coffee cake is patented, but it uses a hexane extraction process to evaporate the waste. Using this method, 15-20% of the oil contained in the waste mass is extracted, and the remainder turns into lumps that can be burned in stoves. There will be no shortage of raw materials in London, Kay says. "In Britain, 500 thousand tons of coffee is consumed annually, and if we used all the leftovers, we could heat a city like Manchester," the entrepreneur notes.
