FUEL OF THE FUTURE

FUEL OF THE FUTURE

10 November 2016

Scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the United States have developed a method for converting feces into a substance similar to oil. In the future, this approach may become the main method for producing liquid fuels.

The conversion is done through a process called hydrothermal liquefaction. It simulates the conditions that lead to the formation of oil in nature, such as high pressure and temperature. However, according to scientists, the transformation takes only a few minutes, although in the natural environment it took millions of years.

The waste, which is in a special tube under high pressure, is heated up to 650 degrees Celsius. The result is a flammable oily liquid.

According to experts, one person produces raw materials per year, the amount of which is enough to produce two to three gallons of fuel.

In 2013, Korean engineers developed a strain of E. coli capable of making gasoline. In March 2016, scientists at the University of California announced that they wanted to use waste as fuel for cars.
