17 April 2015Scientists at the German Institute for Food Technology in Lemgo are inventing new fuel for cars. For this, stale bread is mixed with water, and bioethanol is obtained during its fermentation. “In Germany, 600 thousand tons of surplus bread is produced annually. Since we are throwing away so much bread, we must at least take care of its effective use, ”says researcher Timo Brecker. The first batch of experimental fuel is ready: the alcohol plant in Rockstedt, by adding yeast and enzymes, processed 10 tons of old bread into 2,453 liters of bioethanol. With this amount, according to the law, almost 50 thousand liters of gasoline can be diluted. “This principle can also work with pizza, cornflakes and cakes,” Timo Breuker develops his idea. Such production could be completely waste-free.
